MOVIE: Alice Wonder Friday

UNDERLAND, says screenwriter Linda Woolverton, is a part of the earth. “But it lies somewhere far beneath our world. The only way to get there is to fall down a rabbit hole.” It is the same fantastical land that Alice visited as a child, but she misheard the word “Underland” and thought they said “Wonderland.” Alice, now age 19, heads back down the rabbit hole and though she has no memory of her previous adventures in Underland, she is reunited with its inhabitants, including a swashbuckling Dormouse, an off-his-rocker Mad Hatter, a grinning Cheshire Cat, a caterpillar called Absolem, a beautiful White Queen and her spiteful older sister the Red Queen. “Time has passed,” says Woolverton. “The Red Queen rules the whole land. It’s under her thumb. And the people of Underland need Alice.” Underland has come upon hard times since the malevolent Red Queen took over the throne. It is, however, a truly wonderful land, which might explain why the girl who mistook it for Wonderland has been called upon to help return it to its glory. But, says Woolverton, “Underland has always been Underland since the Beginning, no matter who sits on the throne. It will remain Underland until the End.”

ALICE (Mia Wasikowska) is a 19-year-old woman contemplating her future. An independent soul, she feels trapped in the narrow-minded views of women in aristocratic Victorian London. Alice Kingsleigh is uncertain how to balance her dreams with other people’s expectations. Following the death of her beloved father, she attends a garden party with her mother and sister, although, unbeknownst to her, it’s been planned as her engagement party. Just as the arrogant and dull Hamish Ascot proposes to her, Alice spots a White Rabbit wearing a waistcoat and pocket watch scurrying across the grounds. She rushes off after the furry fellow, tumbling down a rabbit hole and into Underland, a place she first visited as a child (and called Wonderland)—though she has no memory of it or its inhabitants. Alice nevertheless reunites with her childhood friends, including Absolem the caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, and of course, the Mad Hatter—and seeks her true destiny. “In the beginning, Alice is very awkward and uncomfortable in her skin,” Wasikowska says. “So her experience in Underland is about reconnecting with herself and finding she has the strength to be more self-assured in figuring out what she wants.”

CHESSUR, THE CHESHIRE CAT (voice of Stephen Fry) is a dapper tabby with the ability to appear and disappear. He is all calm, casual sensuality with a seductive grin that masks his cowardice. It’s the cat’s disembodied head that first appears to Alice in Tulgey Wood after she’s been attacked by the vicious Bandersnatch. He offers to purify the gashes on her arm by licking them. Alice declines, although she allows him to lead her to the Hatter’s Tea Party where the Hatter blames him for deserting them on the day the Red Queen seized control of Underland. Using his skills and the Hatter’s coveted top hat, Chessur later finds a way to redeem himself.

THE MARCH HARE (voice of Paul Whitehouse) hosts the Mad Hatter’s Tea Parties at his Hare House. Paranoid, anxious and slightly insane, he constantly wrings his paws and ears and has a thing for tossing teapots and other items. He has a penchant for cooking and is one of the few Underland inhabitants to escape the Red Queen’s clutches all together.

IRACEBETH, THE RED QUEEN (Helena Bonham Carter) is the tyrannical monarch of Underland. With her oversized head, fiery temper and propensity to scream for people’s heads to be chopped off, she rules her subjects through fear. “She’s got emotional problems,” says Bonham Carter. “It takes nothing, practically, for her to lose her temper. Her tantrums are that of a two-year-old.” Her younger sibling, the White Queen, has designs on the throne and crown that Iracebeth once stole from her.

ILOSOVIC STAYNE, THE KNAVE OF HEARTS (Crispin Glover) is the head of the Red Queen’s Army. Seven feet, six-inches tall, with a scarred face and a heart-shaped patch covering his left eye, Stayne is an arrogant, tricky character who follows the Red Queen’s every order. He’s the only one capable of pacifying her and calming her dramatic mood swings. “I am the marshal element for the Red Queen,” says Glover. “The Red Queen has a fair amount of short-tempered reactions to things that people do, and so my character has to be quite diplomatic.” His darker side emerges in the shadows of the castle hallways.

TMCTWISP, THE WHITE RABBIT (voice of Michael Sheen) is always late, always in a hurry, always rushing about. Charged with finding Alice and bringing her back to Underland so that she can fulfill her destiny, he shows up at her garden party in an effort to lure her back down the rabbit hole. “He’s a warm character,” says Sheen, “but, at the same time, he can be quite fussy and quite strict with Alice as well. He has an edge to him, a nervous energy, always feeling like he’s behind time. Time is very important to him, but he’s quite brave when called upon.”

MALLYMKUN, THE DORMOUSE (voice of Barbara Windsor) is a swashbuckling mouse in Underland who wears riding breeches. She refuses to believe that the White Rabbit has found the right Alice, the one who can help return Underland to its true splendor, and is only too happy to poke poor Alice in the ankle with a hat pin when Alice insists she’s only dreaming. But the tough little mouse comes through in a pinch when Alice is threatened by a clawing creature called a Bandersnatch. Her loyalty to the Hatter is unmatched, and she willingly faces the prospect of death to stand by him.

ABSOLEM, THE CATERPILLAR (voice of Alan Rickman) is the all-knowing and absolute guardian of the Oraculum, an ancient document that depicts every major event, past, present and future, in Underland’s history. Alice is taken by the White Rabbit and the Tweedles to meet Absolem, so that he can ascertain whether she is, in fact, the real Alice who first visited Underland as a child, the Alice who is destined to help them. They find the bulbous blue caterpillar atop a mushroom in a mushroom forest surrounded by misty smoke. Several times Absolem challenges Alice to come to a better understanding of herself, forcing her to face the difficult question: “Who are you?”

Oriental Eyes Co., Ltd., proudly announced a pleasant surprise of Hong Kong actor’s presence in My Best Bodyguard, the action-packed film directed by Sirippakorn Wongchariyawat. It is no one but Shawn Yue, whose Infernal Affairs trilogy and Initial D are unforgettable, and who famously opposites Josh Hartnett in I Come with the Rain and worked with such renowned directors as the Pang Brothers. Besides, he, together with Ekin Cheng, also won the Best Male Actor Award for Rule Number One (Dai yat gaai) at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival in 2008.

My Best Bodyguard is Shawn Yue’s first Thai film. His role is Sean, a businessman working for an international medicine company, who developed a new kind of vaccine for human immunity. His character is brilliant, ingenious and successful. However, his interest in financial benefits and power may pose a real risk to all mankind.

Of Shawn Yue, Wongchariyawat said, “I really admire his performance, especially his use of eye expression. Something was shone and shown from within. Inner feeling. That’s why we thought of him, when we looked for an actor for the Sean role. It was such a delight when he said yes to My Best Bodyguard.”

Shawn Yue himself revealed why he made a decision to participate in this Thai film with Oriental Eyes, the Thai crew and, most important of all, HRH Princess Ubolratana of Thailand, “Of course, it is my first Thai film. I’ve been here before for working with Hong Kong film crew. But this is my first time to work with Thai people – Thai director, Thai actors and actresses. What a rare chance. Although that a little bit thrills me, I really feel delighted. Furthermore, as I’ve been here in Thailand before, I know Thai culture. Like the Thai people, it is my greatest honour; it’s way beyond my imagination that I have an opportunity to work with HRH Princess Ubolratana of Thailand. It gives me enormous pleasure.

“Finally, I’d like to say ‘Hello’ to all Thai fans. Please support this film. If you like me, I need your support for my first Thai film.”

Get ready to see Shawn Yue’s role in his first Thai film, My Best Bodyguard. In Mid 2010. In Theatres nationwide.

The visit is facilitated by the International Peace Foundation and will include Oliver Stone’s keynote speeches on “Film-making and peace-building” on January 25 at 10 am at the New International School of Thailand and at 8 pm at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand. On the occasion of his visit to Bangkok Oliver Stone will also meet some of Thailand’s most promising actors including Mario Maurer and Sukrit Wisetkaew (BIE The Star), among others.

Oliver Stone is an American film director, screenwriter and producer whose work has earned him three Academy Awards (Oscars), namely for his movies Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July, both centered on the Vietnam War, and for Midnight Express. Some of his most recent films include JFK, Natural Born Killers, Nixon, Alexander, World Trade Center and W. He just concluded the filming of Wall Street 2 with Michael Douglass set for release in April 2010. He has also worked with actors such as Nicolas Cage, Tom Cruise, Anthony Hopkins, Angelina Jolie and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The 3rd ASEAN “Bridges” program is the continuation of a series of 350 “Bridges” events which the International Peace Foundation has already hosted in Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia since 2003. 35 Nobel Laureates as well as 14 other keynote speakers and artists including Dr. Hans Blix, Jackie Chan, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Vanessa-Mae, Jessye Norman and Dr. James Wolfensohn participated in these events which continuously support education as a basis for peace and development in the ASEAN region. Events in Thailand were presided over by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and reached up to now a total audience of 120,000 participants. Former Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun is the Honorary Chairman of “Bridges” in Thailand.

The university will also confer an honorary doctor degree to Oliver Stone.

The detailed program of all “Bridges” events is available on the website www.peace-foundation.net.
Oliver Stone’s biography:

Oliver Stone is an American film director, screenwriter and producer whose work, frequently focusing on contemporary political and cultural issues, has earned him three Academy Awards (Oscars), namely for directing Platoon, filmed in the Philippines and starring Willem Dafoe, (1986) and directing Born on the Fourth of July starring Tom Cruise (1989), which were both centered on the Vietnam War, and for writing Midnight Express starring John Hurt (1978). A Hollywood legend, his films have been nominated for a total of 31 Oscars. Born on the Fourth of July alone earned eight Oscar nominations and was one of Oliver Stone’s most successful films.

Oliver Stone was born in New York City to a father who was a Jewish stockbroker and a Roman Catholic mother of French birth. He was raised an Episcopalian as a compromise, but now practices Buddhism.

After dropping out from Yale University and teaching English at the Free Pacific Institute in South Vietnam, Oliver Stone, enlisted for combat duty as an infantryman in the Vietnam War and was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After returning home, he graduated from Film School at New York University in 1971 where he was mentored by director Martin Scorsese.

Oliver Stone directed Seizure in 1974, The Hand starring Michael Caine in 1981, Salvador starring James Woods and Jim Belushi in 1986, Wall Street, a film focusing on the greedy business world of tycoons and stockbrokers which earned Michael Douglas an Oscar for Best Actor in 1987, Talk Radio starring Eric Bogosian and Alec Baldwin in 1988, The Doors starring Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison in 1991, Heaven & Earth starring Tommy Lee Jones, a film made in Thailand about the true story of Le Ly Hayslip, a Vietnamese girl whose life has been drastically affected by the Vietnam war, in 1993, Natural Born Killers starring Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis in 1994, Nixon starring Anthony Hopkins in 1995 and U-Turn starring Sean Penn and Jennifer Lopez in 1997.

JFK, arguably Oliver Stone’s best film, was released in 1991. It centers on the assassination of John F. Kennedy with Kevin Costner and Tommy Lee Jones in leading roles. The film represented a change in Oliver Stone’s work as he began to explore different camera styles combining them together to create a multi-dimensional way of experiencing a movie. Following JFK’s release Oliver Stone addressed the U.S. Senate over the continued secrecy of documents relating to the John F. Kennedy assassination. Partly through his efforts the government began to declassify documents.

Other films written by Oliver Stone are Conan the Barbarian, the movie that made Arnold Schwarzenegger a star, (1982), Scarface starring Al Pacino (1983), Year of the Dragon starring Mickey Rourke (1985), 8 Million Ways to Die starring Andy Garcia (1986) and Evita starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas (1996).

He also produced the films Reversal of Fortune, which earned Jeremy Irons an Oscar in 1990, The Joy Luck Club in 1993, Milos Forman’s Oscar nominated classic The People vs. Larry Flynt, Indictment: The McMartin Trial, Killer: A Journal of Murder and Freeway in 1996, Savior and Assassinated: The Last Days of King and Kennedy in 1998, The Corruptor in 1999, The Art of War in 2000 and The Day Reagan Was Shot in 2001.

In 1993 Oliver Stone produced a series for ABC Television called Wild Palms which has developed a cult following and has recently been released on DVD. In 1997 he published A Child's Night Dream, a 1,400 pages strong and largely autobiographical novel based on his experiences in Southeast Asia. In 2003 he made two documentary films: Persona Non Grata about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Comandante about Cuban President Fidel Castro, followed, in 2004, by a second documentary on Castro titled Looking for Fidel.

In the past decade Oliver Stone has directed Any Given Sunday starring Al Pacino, Charlton Heston and Cameron Diaz (1999), Alexander starring Colin Farrell and Angelina Jolie (2004), a biopic about Alexander the Great which was partly filmed in Thailand, and World Trade Center starring Nicolas Cage (2006), which centered on two Port Authority Police Department (PAPD) officers during the September 11, 2001, attacks. Stone's latest film is a biopic about George W. Bush, named W., starring Josh Brolin and Richard Dreyfuss (2008). He is currently filming Wall Street 2, starring Shia LaBeouf and again Michael Douglas (2010).

In 2008 Oliver Stone accompanied Hugo Chavez, Venezuela's President and self-appointed negotiator with the Colombian guerilla group known as Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), on a mission to secure the release of three hostages held for over six years. This was part of his research for a documentary with Chavez and 8 other heads of state in South American titled South of the Border (2010).

Oliver Stone is currently working on a 10-hour/10-part series for Showtime called The Secret History of the United States, and a third interview with Fidel Castro for 2010.

Qatar Museums Authority and Tribeca Film Festival To Launch 'Tribeca Film Festival Doha' in November 2009

- Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani and Festival Founders Sign Strategic Alliance Agreement and Announce Long-Term Cultural Partnership

- Doha's Museum of Islamic Art to Host Film Festival

Qatar Museums Authority (QMA), the organization dedicated to developing the cultural resources of this Arabian Gulf state as a platform for international dialogue and understanding, has announced a groundbreaking agreement with New York's world-renowned Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), to launch a world-class international film festival, Tribeca Film Festival Doha. The first festival will take place November 10 - 14, 2009 and be presented at Doha's celebrated new Museum of Islamic Art and in cinemas across Doha.

The announcement of the cultural partnership was made at a special ceremony at the new Museum of Islamic Art, which was attended by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Chairperson of the Qatar Museums Authority Board of Trustees, and Abdullah Al Najjar, Chief Executive Officer of the Qatar Museums Authority. Joining on behalf of the Tribeca Film Festival were the co-founders, Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff.

H.E. Sheikha Mayassa expressed her confidence that the Tribeca Film Festival Doha will bring together people from around the globe and help to build international awareness and understanding of Arab culture and the Arab world.

"I invite film enthusiasts from every country to share their passion for this art by visiting the Tribeca Film Festival Doha," Her Excellency stated. "In today's increasingly globalized world, creative initiatives like this

Festival can play a truly inspirational role by bringing cultures closer together."

Tribeca Film Festival Doha will be modeled after the annual Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, which is going into its eighth year. Like the New York event, it will welcome the community, diverse audiences and the global filmmaking industry. As a result of an extensive collaboration between TFF and QMA, the Festival has been designed to showcase the local Qatari community, as well as the broader Arab culture.

Tribeca Film Festival Doha will feature new work from established filmmakers, alongside film debuts from newly discovered directing talents. The program will include approximately 40 films, as well as special events. The Festival will launch "The Doha Conversations", thought-provoking and insightful dialogues between icons of world culture set in intimate environments, with the goal of fostering discussion in Qatar and around the globe. Full details of the festival program and guests will be announced at a later date.

"The Tribeca Film Festival Doha is destined to become a major annual event in world cinema," stated Abdullah Al Najjar. "The Festival will include a wide range of programming, from outdoor screenings to movies for children, from documentaries to new Hollywood releases and from independent films to showcases of the very best works by Arab filmmakers."

"We are honored to create an enduring cultural partnership with QMA and to announce the launch of the Tribeca Film Festival Doha next November. Qatar's transformational vision for the 21st century with its emphasis on culture and education is uniquely consistent with the goals and aspirations of the Tribeca Film Festival," said TFF co-founder, Jane Rosenthal.

"We hope that film will not only be used as a form of entertainment at Tribeca Film Festival Doha but play a role in bridging cultures closer together. By learning each other's stories, we can see how much we share in common as well as explore and better understand our differences," said Robert De Niro.

"In addition to the positive cultural implications, this initiative underscores the enormous potential of the entertainment market in the Middle East and the strategic importance of the region to the future of the film industry," said TFF co-founder Craig Hatkoff. "We think the key to success will be understanding and respecting one another's cultures and traditions. We believe this Festival will lead to many other important and educational initiatives in Doha and beyond."

"The Tribeca Film Festival has become a world-renowned event, and its new partnership with the Qatar Museums Authority will leverage that success and help further its mission of introducing films and filmmakers to a global audience," said New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. "The Festival's substantial cultural and economic impact in New York City is unequivocal, and our hope is that Doha will reap similar benefits. The expansion of a New York institution like the Tribeca Film Festival to Doha is a sign of the international significance of New York City cinema and will help foster new relationships between our two cities."

Tribeca Film Festival was founded in 2001 by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in response to the events of September 11. The festival's initial purpose was to spur the economic and cultural revitalization of Lower Manhattan through an annual celebration of film, music and culture.

Up to date festival information can be found by visiting the official Tribeca Film Festival Doha website -- www.tffdoha.com
Notes to the Editor
About Qatar Museums Authority

The Museum of Islamic Art opening 1 December 2008 is a pioneering project, setting apart the cultural vision of the State of Qatar, both in the region and across the world. Under the guiding vision of Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Chairperson of the Qatar Museums Authority

Board of Trustees, the project sets the founding stone in the cultural blueprint to transform the State of Qatar into a global capital of culture.

The Museum stands as an architectural masterpiece 60m off Doha's Corniche on an island made of reclaimed land. Pritzker Prize laureate, I.M. Pei, was commissioned to design the 35,500sq m Museum; inspiration for which he found in the 13th century sabil (ablutions fountain) of the 9th century Mosque of Ahmad ibn Tulun in Cairo, Egypt.

The stone-clad Museum is composed of a five-storey Main Building and a two-storey Education Wing, which are connected across a central courtyard. The Main Building's angular volumes step back progressively as they rise around a 50m high central domed atrium. The dome is concealed from outside view by the walls of a central tower. A glass curtain wall rises to a height of 45m on the north side of the Museum offering stunning views of the Gulf and West Bay area of Doha from all five floors of the atrium.

Collected from three continents including countries across the Middle East and as far reaching as Spain and India, the Museum's artworks date from the 7th through to the 19th century. Representing the full scope of Islamic art, the collection includes manuscripts, ceramics, metal, glass, ivory, textiles, wood and precious stones, and are of superior quality.

Qatar Museums Authority was created in December 2005 to combine the resources of all museums in the State of Qatar. The Authority's vision revolves around the provision of a comprehensive umbrella under which future plans will be drawn for the development of national museums and the establishment of an

effective system for collecting, protecting, preserving and interpreting historic sites, monuments and artefacts.
